Where is Sauze d’Oulx?

Nestled in the northwestern corner of Italy, Sauze d’Oulx sits in the heart of the Piedmont Alps, overlooking the spectacular Susa Valley and just 90 km from Turin. Its easy accessibility makes it one of the most appealing mountain getaways in the region.

Turin Airport is only an hour away, offering quick transfers to the resort, while the Milan airports are just 2 to 2.5 hours from the slopes.

For those arriving by car, the drive from the northern French ferry ports is a journey of around 10 hours, bringing you straight to the heart of the Alps.

Travelling by air

There are several airports that you could fly to if you were coming to Sauze d’Oulx. The nearest airport is Turin – Caselle (TRN) Location: 16km North of Turin, 90km east from Sauze. The transfer time by car is around 1 hour.

Airlines that operate a winter service from the UK to Turin are British Airways, Easyjet, Jet2, Ryanair & TUI. From the Republic of Ireland Ryanair fly from Dublin every Saturday.

UK airports with a direct service include Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Bristol, Birmingham & Manchester.

Alternative airports

Chambery and Milan Linate have transfer times of about 2hrs. Milan Malpensa, Geneva and Genoa are about 2.5hrs. Grenoble and Milan Bergamo are around 2hrs 40mins. Times are estimates and of course can differ depending on traffic.

Onward journey from the airport

The easiest, and more often than not, the most cost effective way to get to Sauze d’Oulx would be by private transfer. Prices are typically between €25 & €56 per person (depending on group size).

There is the option of taking a bus from the airport terminal to the main train station in Turin (Porta Nuova). Tickets for this can be bought from a machine in the arrivals hall and cost around €5.00. Allow 40 minutes for the journey time into Turin.

From Porta Nuova you can catch a train to Oulx. Tickets will be around €7.50. Journey time is around 90 mins. Once at Oulx train station there is a regular bus service to Sauze d’Oulx. The cost is €5.00. Journey time around 15 mins. It is a relatively easy journey to make although with lots of baggage it can be frustrating. A taxi from Oulx to Sauze will cost around €20 for up to 4 people. Please be aware that the last bus from Oulx to Sauze departs at 19:45.

Travelling by train

Go green, go by train! The proximity to a main train line makes travelling to Sauze d’Oulx by train a real alternative to flying. Sit back, relax and take in the scenery as you whizz across Europe in comfort. Train travel on the continent is a stress free, enjoyable experience allowing you to arrive in resort some 8 hours after leaving London.

UK train departures

You can take the Eurostar from St Pancras or Ebbsfleet International to Paris Gare de Nord where you will then need to change over to Gare de Lyon. From there you can catch a train direct to Oulx. The whole journey takes just over 8 hours.

Italian train departures

From Turin there are regular trains from Torino Porta Nuova to Oulx. The journey will take approximately 1hr 30mins and cost in the region of €7.50. The Italian trains website will give you more information. There are also high speed train connections between Milan and Turin. Check out either the Frecciarossa or Italo. Journey time is 1 hour and typically the cost is around €40.

Local services

Oulx is the nearest train station to Sauze d’Oulx, or to give it it’s full title Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere. From Oulx it’s a 10 minute bus journey up the mountain to Sauze. The cost is €5.00. Please note that the last bus up to Sauze d’Oulx leaves Oulx at 19:45.

Travelling by car

The journey to Sauze d’Oulx is relatively painless for those who decide to drive. From most of the European ferry ports that serve the routes from the UK the driving time is around 10hrs.

The French motorways are toll roads and the cost of a normal car is around €90 each way.

PLEASE NOTE: Sauze d’Oulx operates what’s called a ZTL which is an Italian traffic control system common in many Italian towns. It restricts the vehicles allowed through the centre of the village between certain hours. All vehicles not registered with the town hall will be subject to a fine if they drive through the centre of town when the ZTL is active. The active times are between 10:00 – 13:00 & 16:30 – 22:00.
