January 28 update
This week has just flown by and I’ve been meaning to get an update posted for the last couple of days but just haven’t had chance. Anyway down to business.
Monday I was skiing around Sauze and Sansicario where I thought the overall conditions of the pistes were good. Some of the shadier slopes were solid but there was certainly enough good snow to choose your turning spot.
Tuesday and Wednesday were spent over in Borgata which is an area off to the left of Sestriere. It’s where the Olympic downhill was held in 2006 and where this weekend the women will compete in the World Cup Super G.
The Olympic run was shut due to the WC competition but that didn’t worry us as the runs to the left of it were simply magnificent. The snow was perfect and as we sat in the restaurant at the bottom having a bombadino it was smiles all round.
Thursday I went to Claviere. The night before I’d picked up my new Atomic SL race skis and couldn’t wait to try them out. Believe me, if the slope conditions weren’t up to it then I wouldn’t have taken them out. Just as we’d found in Borgata, the slopes in Claviere were excellently prepared with plenty of coverage. Another satisfying day on the slopes was had by all.
Today, Friday, it’s snowing and its due to continue on and off for a few days. It’s not heavy but at least it’s falling. The second day of training for the women in Sestriere has been cancelled due to heavy snow and poor visibility. I feel it’s more to do with latter but we definitely have snow.
Anyway to summarise, those coming out on Sunday should be in for some great on-piste skiing/boarding. The off piste still doesn’t exist unfortunately.
