A spring in my step

Sorry it’s been so long since my last offering. February is a busy month at the best of times but I didn’t help myself by leaving the resort a couple of times. For those that follow the blog you’ll probably know the reason for one of those absences but lets not dwell on that, lets just be thankful we got there in the first place!

This month has been a good one as far as snow is concerned. The temperature has been cold which meant that we didn’t get as much snow as we hoped but we’re certainly not complaining. Around the 21st February it started snowing but with the temperature hovering around minus 5 or below it was really fine snow, not really the sort we’re after. It snowed for about 4 days and we were still measuring the depth in centimeters as opposed to meters. Just goes to show it can be too cold to snow (properly).

Wednesday just gone we saw proper snow thanks to the temperature being a little warmer. It started snowing early evening and by the time I went to bed we were fast approaching a foot of snow already. No surprise it was an early night for me with the alarm set for 7.30am, that’s early!

Unfortunately there were a lot of areas closed the next day due to high avalanche risk but that didn’t stop the fun. The Sarnas lift that comes out of Jouvenceaux and into Sportinia is a fantastic area for off piste. It’s all through the trees so safe from an avalanche perspective but skiing off piste close to trees does carry some risks. We skied that one lift all day and I have to say it was one of the most enjoyable days of this season. The snow was a little heavy but I’m being picky. If you want champagne powder then head for Utah not Sauze.

On piste was great fun too if you like it chopped up and a little bit bumpy. First thing in the morning the pistes were fantastic but as always happens with a descent amount of snow small mounds began to appear towards the afternoon. I like this but I can understand if you’re just trying to master parallel turns it could be a little daunting.

Today, Sunday, was a fantastic day on the mountain. You could tell spring is on its way as it was the first day I’ve skied without my hat. Beautiful clear blue skies and excellent snow on piste. The forecast for the coming week says that we should be getting more snow on Tuesday/Wednesday and hopefully quite a bit too. Until the next time.

Used Sauzeonline for our airport transfer and ski hire. The service they provided was excellent. Could not have been more helpful replying to many emails due to questions on travel due to Covid. The transfer service was fantastic and the hire shop very helpful. Thankyou for making our holiday special.
